🌞 Hot Dog Summer: How to Keep Your Pup Safe in the Heat

Summers in Colorado can bring clear skies, mountain adventures... and sizzling temps. While we love the sunshine, dogs don’t handle heat the way we do. At Fusion Dog Training, we want to help you and your pup stay safe, happy, and active—even when the mercury rises.

Here are our top tips for beating the heat with your dog this summer in Colorado Springs:

1. Time Your Walks Wisely

Midday heat can be dangerous for dogs. Aim for early morning or late evening walks when the ground is cooler and the sun isn’t directly overhead.

🔥 Tip: If you can’t hold the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

👉 Need help with leash manners during walks? Check out our Board and Train Program.

2. Watch for Signs of Overheating

Dogs cool themselves differently than humans. Excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or vomiting can all be signs of heatstroke. If you notice any of these, move your dog to a cooler area immediately and contact your vet.

📞 In Colorado Springs? Reach out to Briargate Boulevard Animal Hospital or Bear Creek Veterinary Care for emergency care.

3. Hydration is Non-Negotiable

Always bring water when you're out and about. Portable bowls or dog water bottles are easy to stash in your bag or car. At home, keep water bowls filled with fresh, cool water throughout the day.

💦 Pro Tip: Add ice cubes or a splash of low-sodium bone broth to make water extra enticing!

4. Beat the Boredom Indoors

Too hot to play outside? Keep your pup mentally stimulated with puzzle toys, training games, or scent work. A mentally tired dog is just as satisfied as a physically tired one.
