There’s nothing better than giving dogs the freedom to roam off leash. Watching them run, explore, and enjoy the world around them is one of the greatest joys of being a dog owner. But that freedom comes with responsibility—not just to your dog, but to everyone else sharing the space.

If your dog is off leash, they must be under control at all times. That means having a reliable recall and being able to call them away from distractions—people, dogs, wildlife—immediately. If you can’t control your dog, they simply shouldn’t be off leash.

Respect others. Always ask before allowing your dog to approach another. If someone else has their dog leashed, leash yours too. That dog may be in training, recovering from an injury, or may not want to interact with other dogs—and that’s okay.

When an off-leash dog comes rushing up, uninvited and out of control, it’s not just annoying—it’s incredibly stressful for many dog owners. For people whose dogs need space, it can feel like a violation of their safety and peace. These situations can escalate quickly and put dogs (and their owners) at risk. What was supposed to be a calm, enjoyable walk can turn into a defensive, anxiety-filled encounter.

And let’s be honest—“He’s friendly!” is not an excuse. Just because your dog is friendly doesn’t mean others are, or that every dog wants to be approached. It’s dismissive of the very real needs and boundaries of other dogs and owners.

Off-leash time is a privilege, not a right. It only works when everyone is respectful and responsible. Public spaces are for everyone—including dogs who need space, who are reactive, in training, or simply prefer not to socialize.

If your dog isn’t quite ready for that level of freedom, that’s okay. With proper off-leash training, clear boundaries, and consistent practice, you can get there. But until then, safety and respect come first.
